Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy

What is psychedelic-assisted therapy?

Psychedelic-assisted therapy is the intentional use of natural or synthetic psychedelics for therapeutic purposes. Psychedelics have been used for physical, psychological and spiritual healing for millennia. The criminalization and regulation of psychedelics during the late 60s effectively shut down the therapeutic use of psychedelics for half a century. In recent years, the barriers to accessing psychedelics have begun to come down. Research trials using MDMA, ketamine, and psilocybin demonstrate potential for treating a range of mental health issues, including PTSD, depression, anxiety, addictions and eating disorders.

Why am I interested in psychedelics?

In teaching Harner Shamanic Counselling for the last number of years, it became clear that while it is relatively easy for me to “step beyond the veil” and transition into non-ordinary states of reality, this skill does not come naturally to everybody. I believe it is a capacity within all of us, but that it is easier for some folks than others. Psychedelic medicine is a tool to facilitate that transition. Some medicines are more forceful than others in how they bring you into a non-ordinary state. Each medicine has a different “flavour” - some take you on longer journeys, others shorter, some medicines are gentle while others are more forceful. I believe psychedelic medicines have a powerful ability to facilitate inner healing, but they must be the right match for the person’s needs and they should ideally be taken in a safe environment with a trusted therapist or facilitator.

What I Offer

Important Disclaimer

It is not within the scope of practice of an Occupational Therapist to prescribe or administer medications of any kind, including psychedelics. As a therapist I do not and cannot advise, encourage or recommend engaging in illegal behaviour. Further, I am not ethically or legally able to suggest, recommend, encourage or advise you to take any drug, legal or not.

Ethical Considerations

It is important to note that the resurgence of interest in psychedelics in the West has led to severe issues of appropriation and unsustainability. Psychedelic tourism is common, and some psychedelic plants are at risk of extinction. When considering engaging in psychedelic-assisted therapy, please consider the source of your medicines, who is benefitting from their sale, how sustainability is being ensured, and whether the original medicine keepers are being honoured.
