Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy

What is psychedelic-assisted therapy?

Psychedelic-assisted therapy is the intentional use of natural or synthetic psychedelics for therapeutic purposes. Psychedelics have been used for physical, psychological and spiritual healing for millennia. The criminalization and regulation of psychedelics during the late 60s effectively shut down the therapeutic use of psychedelics for half a century. In recent years, the barriers to accessing psychedelics have begun to come down. Research trials using MDMA, ketamine, and psilocybin demonstrate potential for treating a range of mental health issues, including PTSD, depression, anxiety, addictions and eating disorders.

Why am I interested in psychedelics?

In teaching Harner Shamanic Counselling for the last number of years, it became clear that while it is relatively easy for me to “step beyond the veil” and transition into non-ordinary states of reality, this skill does not come naturally to everybody. I believe it is a capacity within all of us, but that it is easier for some folks than others. Psychedelic medicine is a tool to facilitate that transition. Some medicines are more forceful than others in how they bring you into a non-ordinary state. Each medicine has a different “flavour” - some take you on longer journeys, others shorter, some medicines are gentle while others are more forceful. I believe psychedelic medicines have a powerful ability to facilitate inner healing, but they must be the right match for the person’s needs and they should ideally be taken in a safe environment with a trusted therapist or facilitator.

  • My first introduction to shamanism was through my studies of Arvigo Massage with Rosita Arvigo in Belize in 2008. Her work was rooted in her many-year apprenticeship with the Maya Shaman, Don Elijio Panti. Working with women’s wombs opened up portals for me, and I began seeing into other realms. This was a confusing time for me, and I sought guidance from numerous mentors to help me understand what I was experiencing. I studied with Lori Wilson, a gifted Medical Intuitive from Guelph, Ontario. I took courses in Core Shamanism with The Sacred Trust in England and then became initiated in an ancient gynocentric shamanic tradition based on the wisdom of the honeybee. I learned Harner Shamanic Counselling with the Foundation for Shamanic Studies, and studied women’s priestessship and Celtic shamanism with Nikiah Seeds of the Red Moon Mystery School.

More recently I have reconnected with the pre-Hellenic priestess traditions of Ancient Greece through my studies with Gabriella Gutierrez. None of these practices involved psychedelics, but they all involved soul flight and access to teachers in the non-human world. And these practices have been the source of most of my own personal healing.

In 2022 I enrolled in a post-graduate diploma in Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy at Vancouver Island University. I am currently undertaking the practicum portion of this training. While our program included education in all psychedelics, my interest lies most in the use of ketamine and psilocybin (the active psychedelic component of “magic mushrooms”).

Have questions?

If you have questions about psychedelic therapy, a great place to hear an overview and get your basic questions answered is by listening to the podcast episode “Are Psychedelics An Answer? With Dr. Hilary McBride” on the We Can Do Hard Things podcast.

What I Offer

  • Michael Harner was a contemporary of Stanislav Grof and many of the other leaders in psychedelic therapy in the 50s and 60s. He popularized a non-psychedelic approach to accessing altered states of consciousness using sonic drumming. I have been trained to provide Harner Shamanic Counselling, which teaches people to journey and enter non-ordinary states of consciousness over a period of five, one-hour sessions. For those who are interested in exploring what healing might be available from non-ordinary states of consciousness, Harner Shamanic Counselling is a gentle introduction. Journeys are short, and because no medicines are involved, you have full control over your ability to come out of the experience if you are uncomfortable. The drawbacks of this approach are that it tends to be less intense, and without the medicines it can be harder to surrender and trust what you are experiencing.

  • Ketamine is a synthetic medicine that is typically used as pain relief in hospitals, but at certain dosages can provoke a psychedelic experience and is now used widely across Canada for mental health treatment in ketamine clinics. As part of my graduate certificate in Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy from Vancouver Island University, I am required to complete a certain number of practicum hours. I am currently shadowing and assisting Dr. Alexis Goth two days per month at her ketamine clinic in Bedford, Nova Scotia. If you are interested in receiving ketamine therapy or learning more about it, please fill out this form on Dr. Goth’s website and indicate to her that you would like me involved in your treatment. It is my hope to eventually team up with a physician and nurse to provide ketamine-assisted therapy here in Antigonish. If this would be of interest to you, please let me know.

  • While psilocybin is still a controlled substance in Canada, it is available to a select few through Canada’s Special Access Program (SAP). Preparing a SAP application requires the support of a physician. The theory portion of psilocybin-assisted therapy was covered in my VIU training, and I am scheduled to receive experiential training in Jamaica (where psilocybin is fully legal) at the beginning of November, 2023. Professionally-led psilocybin-assisted therapy is available at multiple locations in Jamaica. If you would like more information about legal, safe access to psilocybin, please contact me.

  • Psychedelic experiences can lead to profound insights, shifts in perspective, and renewed clarity about our values. However, when we return to our everyday lives, it can be easy to lose touch with those insights and clarity and end up back where we started. Integration therapy is an important part of the therapeutic use of psychedelics. It involves taking time to draw connections, ponder our experiences, and make tangible changes to how we engage in our daily lives. As an Occupational Therapist, I am most interested in how psychedelic medicine can shift how we show up and engage with the world around us through our everyday actions and behaviours. Please contact me if you have undergone a recent psychedelic experience and are interested in gaining support in integration.

  • As a regulated health professional, I do not endorse engagement in illegal activities. I cannot provide or administer psychedelics to a client. However, it is also my responsibility as an Occupational Therapist to ensure that people engage in meaningful occupations safely. An excellent resource for determining contraindications for various psychedelic medicines is the Spirit Pharmacist website. If you, or someone you know, is planning to access psychedelics through an illegal or underground provider, I encourage you to book a session to discuss harm reduction approaches.

Important Disclaimer

It is not within the scope of practice of an Occupational Therapist to prescribe or administer medications of any kind, including psychedelics. As a therapist I do not and cannot advise, encourage or recommend engaging in illegal behaviour. Further, I am not ethically or legally able to suggest, recommend, encourage or advise you to take any drug, legal or not.

Ethical Considerations

It is important to note that the resurgence of interest in psychedelics in the West has led to severe issues of appropriation and unsustainability. Psychedelic tourism is common, and some psychedelic plants are at risk of extinction. When considering engaging in psychedelic-assisted therapy, please consider the source of your medicines, who is benefitting from their sale, how sustainability is being ensured, and whether the original medicine keepers are being honoured.
